Monday Pet Roundup

Hi and Welcome to Monday Pet Roundup!

*Today is the kickoff day for Be the Change for Pets second cause, helping provide food and supplies to animal shelters around the world. Check out all the ways you can become involved in the Dog Days of Summer Pet Food Drive.

* How about freezing kibble, apples, and dog treats into a Popsicle, sticking on a stake in the ground and giving your dog a cool treat? Yes, Pet Connection tells us, there really is such an invention: Kool Dogz.

* More cool summer treats for pets from Pet Blog: Cooling Dog Bandana, Cooling Dog Bed, and Chilly Bone!

* Cat owners should be aware of the Feline's Pride cat food recall. Dancing Dog Blog has expanded and updated information.

* You wouldn't knowingly buy a pet from a puppy mill. But with Internet advertising, how do you know what you're getting into? Number One: a reputable breeder will not sell you a puppy without meeting you first. Edie, from Will My Dog Hate Me, shares this and other tips on how to recognize puppy mill purveyors on the Internet.

* Most of us are aware of the puppy mill situation, but what horses? Pet News and Views highlights an article by Laura Allen of Animal Law Coalition describing circumstances of dehydration, cruelty and death in wild horse round ups.

And now, your smile for the day. "No, I haven't seen your lipstick. Why?" Check out the photo from Cute Overload.

On the serious side, have you found a way to support or highlight an important pet cause? And on the light side, does your dog or cat (or bird, horse, parrot) like the water? I'd love to hear about a cat who swims in the pool!

We used to have two small parrots who would climb down from their cages, walk across the house, and into the bathroom when we would shower. They loved taking showers with us. Guess they could hear the water running.

Wow Stephen, I guess it was like their own tropical rain forest!

Cute photos!

Our kitty has a love/hate relationship with water. She loves to splash her paw in her water bowl, and if you leave the water running in the sink she'll have fun with that as well. But larger amounts of water, like the shower, she's not a huge fan. She hates the bathtub initially when my husband takes her in for a bath, but once she gets acclimated to the water, she actually seems to enjoy it (until she gets out and is soaking wet and cold!).

Cleo absolutely loves to the bite the ocean and stand or run through the water!

However she actively avoids the hose when we water and forget about bath time. She turns into a donkey to avoid getting into a tub.

Thanks Kate. Splashing her paw is probably the most fun because it makes a mess! Actual business like bathing is not fun. Luckily, probably kitty doesn't need to be bathed too often.

Hi Sharon! I checked your blog to see if Cleo was a doggy or kitty...aww, a dog, and a beautiful one too. Sounds like Cleo has the same mindset as Kate's cat. Play is fine, but forget the bathing! Our dog Kelly hates the hose too, I guess it's a pretty frightening concept when you think about it.

My budgie adores running water, especially when I let some pool in my hands so he can splach around. :)

That sounds so cute to see your budgie splashing in the water :)

We live on a lake but my dog doesn't care to go in the water. He does enjoy boat rides! My former dog was a lab, and he *loved* the water...complete with dock diving. (And thank you for the DFS Pet Blog mention!)

I recently saw a news piece on TV. Wish I could remember the breed of dogs it was about. The dogs were animals for science. They had never been out of their cages. Never been held or petted. An organization brokered the release of about 80 of them. They're now being slowly brought out and adopted. Just made me want to cry and smile at the same time.

Ellen we had a yellow lab who loved to dive off the dock and swim. Does your dog wear a life jacket when taking boat rides? Always wondered about that!

Helen, I'm with you, I find reading about animal abuse almost too much to bear. Fortunately, there are so many good organizations to help. I'm so happy that group you learned about rescued so many of those lab dogs.
