Today they are aged between 12 and 16 years old. Seeing their beautiful gray muzzles, I'm reminded how long ago this disaster unfolded. As we approach the tenth anniversary of 9/11 I'm taking a moment to say a prayer for all who were touched in any way by this event...and to thank these hero dogs who served so valiantly.
These are a few of the photographs taken by Charlotte Dumas, courtesy of the New York Times magazine. These and more gorgeous photographs of 9/11 Hero Dogs can be found in the forthcoming book Retrieved, with text by Sarah H. Smith.

God Bless those wonderful dogs!
I did a post on these magnificent animals too. I'm so glad they haven't been forgotten and that they have remained active and healthy.
Agree with Gloria, bless these dogs

We read about the book. It is a great way to honour the surviving search and rescue dogs from that terrible day.
Thanks for posting

Lovely tribute! Such beautiful dogs. They gave so much of themselves. They are truly heroes. God bless them!
Thank you for sharing.

I wonder if dogs get PTSD...I would have thought many of the dogs at Ground Zero would die young of respiratory ailments. Glad to see some lived out normal lifespans.
What beautiful critters! :)
The year 2001 should not be repeated
