Now for our very first Koly & Kelly's Fitness Challenge!

This week we're going to start nice and easy and walk it off!

Your Challenge (should you choose to accept it) is to walk for 60 minutes this week.

Why Walking? Walking is all sorts of good for your body. Studies show that walking can reduce the risk of coronary heart disease, lower blood pressure, reduce high cholesterol and improve blood lipid profile, reduce body fat, enhance mental well-being, increase bone density and help prevent osteoporosis, reduce the risk of Type-2 diabetes and more. Walks are also good for Fido, providing a much needed outlet for energy and helping to burn off a few of those Scooby Snacks!

You know that runner's high everyone is always talking about?

Well, we believe that walking is the Gateway drug. Once you get in the habit of walking with your dog, you'll want to do more and more fun, fitness activities with Fido. The great news is that most dogs have an insatiable appetite for walking and they are happy to go where ever you may lead them.

Make it Your Own

The great thing about getting fit with Fido at K9 Kamp is that you can customize each challenge so that it works for YOU. No fancy rules, no crazy equipment. Just you, your dog, a leash and a collar.

Ready to walk?

Start with a "warm up walk" by walking at a normal pace for a few minutes. Once you are warm, start walk at a brisk pace that challenges you, but does not leave you gasping for breath. (A good brisk walk burns more belly fat & liver fat than a casual stroll!) You should be able to carry on a conversation as you walk. If you can't, you might be working too hard!

Remember to watch your walking posture! Swing your arms, keep your head up, back straight and abs flat. Point your toes straight ahead and take long strides, but don't strain.

Not ready for 60 full minutes of fitness fun? Do you live on the face of the sun and have to exercise before dawn or after dusk? Try splitting the 60 minute challenge up into smaller blocks so that it works for your fitness level and schedule. Kamp is easily split into:
  • 1 - 60 minute Session

  • 2 - 30 minute Sessions

  • 3 - 20 minute Sessions

  • 4 - 15 minute Sessions

Working out during the day? Make sure you bring a water bottle for both you and for your pup!

Just getting started on a new fitness routine? Feeling a little out of shape? Find a nice flat area or a neighborhood with easy, rolling hills. Choose several shorter sessions like 15 to 20 minutes.

Want to kick it up a notch and really challenge yourself and your dog? Consider carrying a can of wet dog food in each hand as a weight. (I suppose you could use normal hand weights or wrist weights, but really? Where is the K9 Kamp fun in that?!) For dogs who need more of a challenge a Dog Pack weighted with water bottles adds some extra weight and helps burns some additional calories. Another fun way to add some challenge and keep your walks fresh is to walk in a steeply hilled neighborhood or in a location with a lot of stairs. Hills & stairs are great for the butt!

Pups and their people who are up to the challenge can even try jogging or running together to add an extra punch to their workout.

Not a fan of walking? Consider biking with your dog, like Carrie and her pups do over at All Things Dog Blog!

  1. Woo-hoo! Let's get this K9 Kamp started! Sherman and I are ready!!!
Thanks for all the wonderful tips Peggy and Kelly!

  2. THIS is gonna be a really FUN thingy. Best of Luck to ALL.

  3. We're off to a good start, as it was cooler this morning than any morning since May--Yay! I biked Tanner and Oliver for a total of 60 minutes. Oliver did about 40 and Tanner just over 20. Tanner takes a swim to supplement his exercise routine every afternoon, playing fetch and getting an easier workout on his joints. This is really good for a larger dog breed that may be prone to hip displaysia as they age. I'm trying to take it easy on his joints!

This is pretty much our daily routine during warm weather (10 months of the year here in Florida!), but we do change it up a bit with walking, hikes, dog park games, fetch and a little bit of agility. Thanks for building in so much flexibility.

  4. @Jen Give Sherman a hug from me and tell him "You can do it!"

  5. @FrankieFurter You are so funny with your terminology! Yup this is a fun thingy! Even if you don't need to lose weight, you can join in any time and win prizes!

  6. @Carrie Congratulations on a GREAT start! And thank you for the tip about swimming for dogs with joint problems. It has been raining here constantly but I am going to get Kelly out for her walk regardless. She won't mind the rain, so I have to be a good sport!

  7. Hi Peggy: Sometimes we have fun playing tag in the pool. Tanner is getting pretty fast and I really have to put the moves on to stay ahead of him. It's fun!
