Wednesday Pet Roundup

Kelly chases after a tennis ball.
Hi and welcome to Wednesday Pet Roundup!

 * This AMAZING story had me bawling...but don't worry, it gets happy. Harper the deformed puppy found in the trash heals because of LOVE!  According to TODAY online, the pit bull puppy was found, in the trash, so badly deformed that vet workers decided the only humane thing to do was to euthanize her.

"That’s when Erica Daniel, a regular at the local animal shelter, stepped in. She decided to take the puppy home for one full and final day of unabashed affection. “I had to show her what it was like to be loved,” Daniel said. “I’d planned on taking her home that night, letting her sleep in bed with us, and having her humanely euthanized in the morning.” And that very day, Harper began healing, walking, and thriving! Harper is now 11 weeks old and will soon be ready for adoption.

* These surfing dogs raised more than $100K to help orphaned animals. Way to go Surf Dog Ricochet, and others!

*Wow, Dieting with my Dog and Koly and Kelly's K9Kamp are right! Reuters article today confirms:  Looking for a fitness buddy? Get a Dog!

Dog and Me, Weight Loss Before and After Shots

My dog and I are dieting together, and have been for some time now. We've discovered that keeping fit is a lifelong challenge. Sometimes we do better than others. But now we have the basics, and if sometimes we slip, we always find our way back. It's not easy, it's not always fun, but we're healthier and happier. Working together is the best part.

By way of encouraging you all, I'm going to be totally open. So I thought I'd like to share with you here, our Before (as embarrassing as it may be) and After pictures. If we can do it, you can too!

Wednesday Pet Roundup

This is my very best friend, Snakey.
Hi and Welcome to Wednesday Pet Roundup!

* Have you seen the marathon of posts, messages and tweets for "Less Adoptable Pet week"? I love it! These pets include black dogs, FIV+ cats, senior pets, and special needs pets. Even Ellen got in the act! Have you ever adopted one of these special animals?

*Beware of a cruel new email scam demanding cash to vaccinate puppies "or they will die." The emails allege to come from the San Francisco International Airport, but officials there warn this is not the case. The Huffington Post reports that the emails claim to be selling puppies and other exotic pets, and then "demands payment of $410 to cover the cost of vaccination. And, just in case the drama of a lawsuit is not enough, the scammers include a final line in the email: 'Remember, if this puppy is not vaccinated, he is going to die.'"

* And now for something to put a smile on your face, check out this slideshow from Business Insider of cats using computers!

* Have you and your dog been getting fit along with us? It's never too late to check out Koly and Kelly's K9 Kamp. There is no need to sign up. No commitment. No obligation. No secret handshake. We'd just love to see you drop in and check out some of our fitness challenges, healthy recipes, and fun. And, as always, check back on Thursday to win great prizes such as collars and leashes, toys, ID tags, DVDs, and more! (and, 1 day left to win fetching sticks!) Check out how some of K9Kampers are doing-- after the jump.

Fall Baking for Fido

Whatcha cooking, Mom?
I'm not much of a baker, but every fall I sort of get the idea that I should be baking something with apples...pumpkin...cinnamon. And, thanks to Tasty Tuesday on Kol's Notes, I can bake healthy recipes for my dog! Today we are trying Tuna Tasties.

I loved these, because they were simple to make! And only 3 ingredients, and things I actually had on hand: tuna, pumpkin and egg.

Tuna, Pumpkin and egg.

First, I mixed together the ingredients.

Can I help, Mom?

Tuna and pumpkin buttons, and tuna and pumpkin crackers.

They have to bake for a while before you can eat them, Kelly.

Finished!

Hurry, I'm waiting!
Okay, now it's time for Kelly to try them out. She was so excited by the aroma, she could hardly wait!

I was pushing my luck asking her to "stay" while I took a picture.

Nom nom nom!
There! She snagged it fast!

Success! Kelly loves these, the ingredients are healthy, and they are only 5 calories each! Best of all, someone with limited skill (me!) could cook them! I hope you try them out too. Check out Tuna Tasties recipe on Tasty Tuesday!

Calorie Counting, Canine Style

When it comes to counting calories, I'm not a big fan. I start a tally, but I always give it up by the time a few days goes by.

But I AM a fan of knowing about how many calories are in my food, and about how many calories I should consume each day. For example, I thought that multigrain bagel sounded healthy....but do you know it contains about 390 calories? That's without the cream cheese!

The same is true when thinking about my dog's food. I used to just scoop Kelly's food into her bowl, but my veterinarian taught me to measure it to make sure I was scooping the right amount. And I didn't realize how quickly treats add up! (Yup, Kelly gets a treat for just about anything she does during the day!) Many pet parents I talked to mentioned that too many training treats were one of their dog's biggest weight loss challenges.

Here are some calorie counts of some popular dog treats.

Alpo Liv-A Snaps- 13 cals
Purina Beggin' Strips - 30 cals
Pro Plan medium biscuits- 45 cals
large Milkbone Gravy biscuit -  80 cals
Milkbone XL Biscuit- 225 cals
small/medium JumBone- 270 cals
Large Busy Bone Dental Bone- 600 cals

According to quiz results of  Guess How Many Calories Are In These Dog Treats on PetSugar, the average score was only 1.8 out of 10 correct!

As you can see, many people are unaware of the number of calories in their pets' treats.

Choosing the right dog treats is very important. At 37lbs, Kelly needs approximately 752 calories a day. A couple of some of these treats a day would put her over her calorie needs, without even taking into consideration her meals!

The total number of calories your dog needs depends upon age, weight, activity level, whether she is pregnant or nursing, and other factors. You can also check out this How Much to Feed Your Dog chart for some more guidelines.

Good thing Kelly also LOVES baby carrots for a snack!
You can also check out Tasty Tuesday healthy recipes!

Adopt Me Because I Need You

For today's blog hop I hope everyone who hops by will take note of Petfinder's Adopt A Less Adoptable Pet week, starting Monday. This year's theme is:
Don't Hate me Because I'm _______________, Adopt me Because I Need You.

What a theme. That just catches me in my heart. To think about a homeless pet that is passed over because he is old, or has a disability, or maybe isn't as pretty as the next. And he NEEDS ME. It breaks my heart.

On September 17, Petfinder.com is kicking off its 3rd Adopt-A-Less-Adoptable-Pet campaign, after recognizing that approximately 95 percent of shelters and rescue groups have a harder time finding homes for certain pets, such as seniors, big black dogs, adult cats or pets with medical problems.

Many such "less adoptable” pets are now working as therapy or service animals after they finally found someone who wanted to adopt them...from the one-eyed R.E.A.D. dog who visits elementary schools, to abused or neglected dogs who are now working in the narcotics department at the police force.

Petfinder's will be featuring a gallery on their website during the weeklong event to highlight just how many pets need to be given a chance. Visitors can also log onto Petfinder.com and type in their zip code to find adoptable pets at their local shelters or rescue groups.

A Dog with Boundless Energy

I'd like to introduce you to one of our amazing Featured Bloggers at Koly and Kelly's K9Kamp (To meet another Featured Blogger, check out Kol's Notes too!) And, keep reading to the end to find this week's contest for Juniper Fetching sticks from Molly's Products. Good luck!

Rescued Insanity
 Your name: Kristine
 Age: (or undisclosed!) 29
Occupation: It's a secret  oooh now you've got me curious!
 Favorite activity: Dog agility
 Favorite food: Cheese

Your dog’s name: Shiva
Breed: The question of the year! We really don't know, but we'd love to
hear your best guess!  lab, bull terrier, hound, and ....??
Age: Three. Ish.
Favorite activity: Running off-leash at the dog park
Favorite food: Stinky fish

2. Tell us about your blog
My blog is primarily about my relationship with my rescue dog, Shiva, and our struggle to understand one another. From the very first day, life with her has not been easy.  But I love her to death even when I want to throttle her.  It's a wonderful thing to not just love a dog, but to try to understand her too.

 3. Why did you decide to participate in Koly & Kelly's K9 Kamp? Did your
dog urge you to sign up...or did you think your dog perhaps needed a little
intervention? What are your goals for the Kamp?
I've been looking for ways to get more exercise for a long time now. But I
work 40 hours a week; 40 hours that my dog spends home alone. The idea of leaving her alone longer so I can go to the gym makes me feel incredibly
guilty. A few months ago I posted about wishing there was a way to combine
a workout for me with spending quality time with my dog. Our twice-daily
walks just aren't cutting it. When I was contacted about K9 Kamp I leaped
at the opportunity! Glad you did!

My goals are simple: I hope to come up with some creative ways to exercise myself while having a great time with my dog.
