FitDog Friday- Furry Fun Run

Running is great for your health, and even greater when it combines running with your furry friend, and raising money for a great cause. FitDog Friday is co-hosted by Peggy's Pet Place, Slimdoggy, and our new co-host To Dog With Love! Today I want to share a great idea for getting fit with your dog--a 5k race. And you don't have to be a pro athlete to do it.

Last weekend I attended the Furry Fun Run in Saratoga NY, a 5K race to benefit Peppertree Rescue. This group is near and dear to my heart, because they are the group who found us Brooks. They invited me to join in and sell my books at the event, and I donated a copy of Dieting with my Dog to be awarded in one of the prize baskets as well.

You can run or walk the course, and runners' entry fees helped benefit the rescue group. You didn't need to run with a dog, however more than 200 two-legged runners participated, most along with one or more four-legged companions. Everyone was in a great mood, despite the chilly and wet weather.

The quickest time was a bit over 17 minutes (wow!) and the last runners/walkers came in after about an hour and a half. No matter the time, everyone had fun and got fit with their dogs!

This post is part of FitDog Friday, where every week we share ways people are getting fit and healthy with their pets, tips and news bits, our challenges and successes. I hope you'll join in the hop!

We Love the Dog Runs here in Utah! Even many of the people Fun Runs
allow our dogs. What is fun to watch is how many people enjoy seeing and
running with the dogs. They truly are a great motivational running
partners - they never complain and are always ready to go.

Looks like fun. I don't think we'll ever be able to do such a thing
with Rita. She has issues on leash with other dogs (which she's come a
long way with, but still - best to not overwhelm her!), and she's not a
    fan of crowds either.

Fun to go and see all the pups having a good time.

  19. Yup those low to the ground dogs especially do get their undercarriages muddy!

  20. So many people and dogs enjoy running. I can't say that I've found the running passion yet, but I try to walk fast!

  21. That was the most fun to see...little dogs, big dogs, muscular dogs and
heavy dogs all had fun. Some dogs were carried in backpacks or stollers
if they couldn't go that far!

    ReplyDelete
  22. If you're not running, it's fun to go and just dog watch!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Even if there aren't 5k runs, you may find other opportunities. We have a
Bark for Life run coming up for cancer research. Maybe they're doing
something like that near you too.

  24. Thanks Frankie and Ernie! I don't think I saw any dachshunds running the race this time.

  25. Absolutely...they never complain about running and exercising, although I do! Good thing my dog motivates me to move.

  26. Kelly has issues with other dogs too, and gets overwhelmed by being
around a lot of dogs, so we had to go without her. It would have been
more fun to have brought a dog.

As a matter of fact tomorrow is the SPCA Walk for the Animals here
in Lakeland and Giz and I will be there...The Walk raised $130,000 last
year which was amazing and all the walkers had a great time...

How fun! Mom always wanted to do the Halloween run with us but she
didn't think we would run with costumes. These days she usually runs
alone as my sister has retired from running and my legs are short so I
can't go more than a few miles. Mom misses running with dogs, she says
it makes running so much easier.
