Am I crazy about dogs...or just crazy?

You'd think I'd be excited when a friend told me, "I just read a book, and it mentions your book!"

Well I was excited...except the book is called Rabid: Are you crazy about your dog or just crazy? What on earth did this author, Pamela Redmond Satran say about my book? Does she think I'm....crazy?

Satran's book description states, "Rabid holds a humorous mirror up to our dog-centered society,  helping us laugh at our own behavior, and at the even-more-insane antics of all those other dog people." Curiosity got the best of me and I finally decided that I had to order a copy of the book and see what it said.

I found my entry on page 84 in the chapter Arts and Entertainment. Satran states, "There's an endless appetite for dog books, one that writers and publishers are only too eager to keep filling. (Imagine!) Some of the subjects new to the shelves:" She then lists more than a dozen books--Reiki for Dogs; Dog-Friendly Gardening; Dog, Inc.; and....Dieting with my Dog!

Phew! She doesn't think I'm crazy!
I don't think.
The author doesn't really make judgements. The book simply lists current and popular dog products, accessories, services and treatments, including:
creative haircuts
fashion and costumes
dog resorts
treats such as foie gras flavored ice cream
doggie day care
websites such as Dogster, Dogbook, and Life with Dogs
instructions on how to knit a sweater from your dog's fur

Where the author feels the line is drawn between crazy about our dogs...or just crazy...I'm not sure.
What do you think--is there a line? Is there anything you feel might be over the top? Do your friends or loved ones suspect you might be a bit over the top yourself?

I know my dog loving friends all "get" me, the others, don't , but I don't care x

  2. LOVE the title of the book. Definitely many just love their dogs and other perceive it as craziness. Lots of Golden Woofs, Sugar

BTW: We send you an email last night. we did not get the actual write up just the permission form. Please re-send it. Golden Thanks

  3. Thanks! p.s. Sent it last night, should be there for you now :)

  4. I'm pretty sure I'm a little of both... ;)

  5. Well, I probably walk the fine line with my love of dog clothing for Pip. He probably doesn't need so many t-shirts, hats, and coats.

  6. Crazy is such a relative term... But, really, I don't think it's any crazier than most other hobbies. (Yes, I know, calling dog ownership a hobby is oversimplifying it to a large extent, but I think having kids is a hobby, too, so...) People spend inordinate amounts of time on a particular endeavor. I think of guys who get boats. Or, a family member who is so enthralled with knitting that she buys raw wool, spins it, dyes it, goes to knitting camp (yep), redid her closet to accommodate her supplies, and so on. People have passions. Dogs just happen to be ours!

  7. Love me, love my dog and everything I do for him...If you think I'm crazy then we're probably not friends

  8. I know some people think I'm crazy when it comes to my dogs. After all, I talk about my dogs more than my husband or anything else. But then I read all the dog blogs out there and realize I'm actually rather normal! :)

  9. Well, firstly, any publicity is good publicity ...

As for the crazy part? I'd like to answer with a quote from Hitchhiker' Guide to Galaxy:

Arthur: Normality? We can talk about normality until the cows come home.
    Ford: What is normal?
    Trillian: What is home?
    Zaphod: What're cows?

  10. I am also crazy about animals and specially dogs. I have a Golden Retriever pup and I love him so much. Read more about this.
